Abstract: A methodological approach for the study of historical structures in particularly hazardous conditions is proposed. Preliminary knowledge investigations, proper diagnosis methods and assessment procedures are selected and proposed for specific structural problems, in order to define suitable improvement techniques able to increase the safety level according to preservation and restoration criteria. Both stone and brick masonry structures are considered, and their performances under severe horizontal (seismic) and vertical (high-compression) actions, respectively, are investigated. The use of traditional, modern and innovative materials and techniques is also discussed, in the light of proper experimental validations, able to calibrate analytical and numerical models for reliable analyses and suitable simulations.
