Abstract: When TiO2 absorbs UV light under ambient condition, very strong oxidation power is produced at the surface and most adsorbed organic compounds could be decomposed.
Based on this reaction, various materials coated with TiO2 can decompose organic contaminants accumulating of their surface under rather weak UV light contained in solar light. .In addition, water wettability of the TiO2 coated material surfaces becomes very high by UV irradiation, and such a highly hydrophilic property is maintained for a few days even in the dark. These findings have opened novel functions of TiO2 coated materials, i.e., building materials with self-cleaning and anti-bacterial function without using any chemicals, but using only sun light and rainwater.
For the further development of the photocatalysis, we developed various TiO2 with novel functions Here we will report (1) hydrophobic TiO2 photocatalyst which turns to highly hydrophilic under irradiation, and (2) visible light sensitive TiO2 photocatalyst based on metal-to metal charge transfer process.
