Abstract: Numerical modelling of concrete at the meso-scale poses significant challenges for which traditional modelling architectures, developed to simulate structures, are not optimally suited.
Some techniques can be used to better simulate concrete at the material level, with the goal of simulating samples of size and complexity comparable to that of standard laboratory samples.
This includes optimisation for micro-structure generation and meshing, a method for simulating space-time dependant behaviour, as well as the use of extended finite element for variable geometry. We have implemented a modelling framework which we call Amie (Automatic meshing for integrated experiments).
