Abstract: This paper describes a method to measure the 3D-microstructure of a material which can be used to perform fracture simulations. A model concrete is made and the 3D structure is obtained with a CT-scanner. The 3D-image is used to specify local material properties in a 3D-lattice structure which is adopted to simulate uni-axial tensile tests. The outcome of the simulations is compared with experimental data obtained from deformation controlled tests on the real concrete. The measured and simulated crack patterns and stress-deformation results compare remarkably well. The described method can be used to determine the input parameters for fracture models in such a way that realistic fracture behaviour of materials can be predicted.
