Abstract: The building materials assessment often requires an assessment of engineering properties and of the material condition. The water content variations may be a sign of damage, but they can also indicate a context favouring damage. Finally, they also influence the NDT measurement process, making difficult the quantitative assessment, since it is difficult to make the part between various sources of variations.
Similarities between concrete, timber and masonry are highlighted and a general methodology is shown which can provide new tracks for a quantitative assessment of both water content and stiffness. It is shown, from experimental data obtained on concrete, how this quantification is possible, by using regression models, by using a relevant set of NDT measurements, with a real added-value, since the complementarity can be quantified and looked for. The quality of estimation can also be quantified.
