Abstract: The paper describes the assessment of existing runway beams for the overhead traveling crane of a steel manufacturing plant. The exposure to 50 years of industrial environment and the inadequate construction consisting in very low concrete covers caused relevant corrosion damage. The assessment strategy consists of a preliminary condition rating of the structure made of 46 spans of reinforced-concrete (R/C) continuous beams. As a second step a detailed evaluation of limit states (LS) is effected for the most deteriorated elements, indicated by the condition rating. The results show significant coupling of the mechanical and environmental damage. The conclusions regard the efficiency of the methods used to predict the safety of the existing R/C structure.
