Abstract: A number of preliminary investigations on reinforced concrete specimens were performed as a part of a larger project dealing with the evaluation of bridges by means of the Acoustic Emission technique.
This paper presents the results obtained in the experimental study on AE monitoring and its applicability in detection of damage processes on reinforced concrete specimens subject to cyclic load.
During the investigation, reinforced concrete beams (10x15x80 cm) were cyclically loaded in flexure until failure. Ribbed and plain reinforcing bars were used so as to simulate the difference in the AE performance between "new" and "old" concrete structures. Applied load, deformation, and AE activity were monitored during the process of cyclic loading.
Observation of the Kaiser Effect and study of applicability of AE techniques for damage localization were the focus of this investigation.
