Abstract: Very often, the origin of damage is enhanced moisture content either at the surface or inside the wall and structural elements of the building. This damage has not only an influence on the durability but might lead to spalling of brick and mortar and is thus relevant for the safety of the structure.
The assessment of moisture damage requires the application of non-destructive testing methods covering large areas of the surface and volume and giving quantitative data of periodic investigation. Although several methods are available, there is a lack of information concerning the application, interpretation and quantification of methodologies and data.
In this paper, applications of radar and active thermography will be presented. Laboratory and case studies will be described concerning the determination of moisture content and moisture distribution parallel as well as perpendicular to the surface. The most relevant parameters having an influence on measurement limits and accuracy (electrical and thermal material properties, measurement parameters) will be described. Future needs for modifications of methods and new guidelines and recommendations will be outlined.
