Abstract: This paper describes a new sensor, designed for remote (non-contact) measurement of deflections on bridges and large structures in both static and dynamic conditions. The new system consists of a radar sensor apt to simultaneously measure the displacement response of several points belonging to a structure with high accuracy. In addition to its non-contact feature, the new equipment provides other advantages including portability, quick set-up time and a wide frequency range of response. In the paper, the radar-based sensor and its basic principles are first described; subsequently, the results of live-load static tests performed on a full-scale bridge are presented and discussed.
