Abstract: The paper describes the use of different inspection techniques in the study of two large Gothic constructions -the church of Santa Maria del Mar in Barcelona and Mallorca Cathedral. In both cases, NDT and MDT methods provided valuable information on the internal morphology of the structural components (piers, walls, vault fillings, foundations) allowing the preparation and calibration the models needed for structural analysis.
Particular attention is given to the combined role of historical research, inspection, monitoring and structural analysis in the characterization of historical structures and the way these activities were laid-out and integrated in the two case-studies presented.
