Abstract: The paper presents the relevant results of an in situ investigation on two ancient masonry buildings in Florence. The two buildings are of historical interest and are subjected to conservative restrictions. They have different morphology: the first one is simple and isolated on three sides, the second one is more complex and it is attached to the neighbouring buildings. The investigation involves a preliminary phase concerning the research of the historic documents and a second phase of execution of in situ and laboratory tests to detect the mechanical characteristics of the masonry.
Flat-jack tests, DRMS tests on mortar joints and compression tests on masonry units are included in this study. Direct visual inspections of masonry textures, of floor slabs and the vaults have been also performed. This investigation was conceived in order to obtain the "LC2 Knowledge Level" as suggested by the new Italian technical Standards for seismic upgrading of existing masonry buildings [1].
