Abstract: Vulnerability of ancient masonry structures to dynamic actions in seismic areas, are mostly due to the ageing, environmental factors and lack of knowledge in the interpretation of the building construction methods and details during intervention. The study of building construction method and structural details, such as foundations and other related sub structure elements, has a great importance in the mechanical and dynamic behavior of a building.
Although foundations of heritage structures are the best surviving part of a building, they are often the least studied portion for it is difficult to excavate and very few information are available. Foundation design was also an important consideration for ancient builders that they designed the foundations of their buildings taking proper account of ground conditions.
The main objective of this paper is to point out the design of historical foundation systems of master builders through reviewing archaeological and history of architecture publications, discussions with archaeologists and experiences met during diagnosis phase of restoration works.
