Abstract: Today there is an increasing demand for quality, durability and sustainability. To achieve durability goals, a chain of activities has to be considered. In this contribution links of the "quality chain" will be identified and discussed. In this respect the role of codes, models, certificates and the human factor are discussed. Aspects like dedication, discipline, awareness responsibility and education will be addressed as well. The role of predictive numerical models in the design process will be emphasized. However, overestimating the relevance of individual quality factors will not contribute to durability. Reversely, underestimating the importance of individual factors may weaken the strength of the quality chain and jeopardizes durability. It is a matter of balance! Together the links of the quality chain form the acronym DREAMCODE. The letters of this acronym stand for the key issues in durability design.
