Abstract: The compressive strength of cement mortar is a very important parameter for designing concrete materials. The common method for measuring the compressive strength is uniaxial compressive experiment. Experimental results show that the micro-crack evolution is always in the direction parallel to that of compressive load. By virtue of Eshelby’s equivalent inclusion theory and Mori-Tanaka’s scheme, the nucleation mechanism of miscro-crack in cement mortar is investigated. The results obtained in the present work show that the tensile stress at the surface of microvoids leads to the nucleation of the micro-cracks.
