Abstract: This paper presents a virtual reality exploration of cementitious materials on different levels of the microstructure. Microscopy observations have revealed the physical existence of a so-called patch microstructure in concrete. Systematic experimental research into dispersion characteristics of "particles", such as aggregate grains and fibers on meso-level, and pores and unhydrated cement on micro-level, would be time-consuming and thus expensive. Physical discrete element computer simulation (DECS) by concurrent algorithm-based SPACE system is an economic and potentially reliable alternative. Paper presents supporting evidence for aforementioned microscopy data and, in doing so, demonstrates the reliability of the applied DECS approach for predicting dispersion characteristics.
