Abstract: Much has been writing about functional minerals with pozzolanic properties that improve the mechanical and durability performance of cement and concretes, as par example metakaolin or silica fume. New technologies in mineral processing have allowed production of new minerals with virtually zero carbon dioxide emissions. Microsilex(TM) is a high surface area microsiliceous pozzolan -where the silica of the material is conformed mainly of cristobalite, tridymite and amorphous material- that combined with Portland cement and water improves the physical-chemical properties of the plain binder. When used in combination with Portland cement, Microsilex increases the mechanical properties of cement paste as well as concrete in terms of strength. Durability with respect to sulfate resistance, chloride-ion penetration and mitigation of alkali-aggregate reaction are as well improved. Microsilex is an environmentally responsible product since the siliceous pozzolanic material, having high pozzolanic index, is produced by a low energy consumption method than most common additives and with virtually zero CO2 contribution.
