Abstract: In order to study the impact of drying on the chloride induced corrosion in concrete, a concrete reinforced beam, which was stored 40 years in a marine environment, has been investigated. After bringing it to the lab, initially water saturated, the beam was cut into four specimens. All the sides of each specimen were covered with epoxy resin except the bottom side in order to dry only according to one direction. Thermohydric probes were inserted inside one specimen at different depths from the bottom side allowing to get humidity profiles. The four specimens are destroyed at regular intervals to quantify the impact of drying on the corrosion level. On one specimen, concrete cores were sampled in order to measure moisture transport parameters which could serve to simulate the drying. The other specimens were used for to concrete chemical and physical properties characterization, as well as the corrosion evaluation.
