Abstract: The paper presents the evaluation of the protective performance coating systems during long-term service in the aggressive environmental exposure conditions of Cooling Towers.
A visual inspection of 19 repaired and protected cooling towers were carried out. Three of them were subsequently selected as more detailed subjects for the study. Their repair and protection had been realized by an experienced specialist company, after careful technical assessment.. The coating systems were applied as protection on both the internal and external sides of the cooling towers concrete shells. A visual assessment of the coating systems’ appearance and their adhesion to the concrete surfaces were made on site. Water permeability, water vapour permeability, carbon dioxide permeability and coating thickness measurements, were all tested on samples taken from the Cooling Towers, in the laboratory at the Building Research Institute in Warsaw. The assessment of any change in the technical performance and properties of the coating systems after more than 12 years in service was also made, by comparison with freshly applied materials. The laboratory testing results of the coatings systems as well as discussion on its service life and durability are also presented.
