Abstract: Reinforcement corrosion due to chlorides is the most severe deterioration problem in Norway. Chlorides may be introduced into the concrete during mixing or transported into the concrete over years due to diffusion or other transport mechanisms. Structures in marine environment are most vulnerable, but deicing salt in winter, dust binding salt in summer and airborne salt may also be a problem.
This presentation concentrates on chloride penetration into concrete structures in marine environment. Based on measured chloride profiles from existing structures, effective diffusion coefficients are calculated and correlated to concrete properties. The findings are supplemented by results from an ongoing laboratory research programme.
