Abstract: A large number of restoration plasters, especially developed for salt loaded substrates, have been introduced on the market in the last decades. The performance of these plasters in the field is not always satisfactory. The reasons of the failures may be found in the severity of the exposure conditions (salt load, moisture supply and environmental conditions) as well as in the moisture transport properties of the substrate/plaster combination. In this paper two case studies, in which damage to the same restoration plaster appeared after few years from its application, have been investigated. Information has been gathered on the plaster composition, on the moisture and salt sources and distribution and on the physical properties of the substrates and of the plaster. All obtained data, together with a combined monitoring of the damage and of the environmental conditions, allowed defining the main factors of risk for the application of this plaster.
