Abstract: In modern masonry construction in the United States masonry mortar is specified by using a ASTM C 270 Standard Specification for Mortar for Unit masonry. This specification provides a framework for the industry to conduct commerce, understand the nature of the mortar and the test methods to assess the mortar. Mortars for historic structures however cannot be specified using such a specification. This paper will review the efforts of the ASTM C12.03.03 task group to develop a mortar develop a standard specification. The key considerations included are: the nature of the binder and aggregate, curing conditions, and physical properties which include compressive strength, water vapor transmission and ductility.
