Abstract: Many historic buildings in Prague were built with natural hydraulic limes. Mortars currently available on the market are not matching the historic ones and various modern mortar mixes are being applied on historic monuments. A new production of metakaolinite started recently in the Czech Republic and the possibility of its utilisation for production of artificially hydraulic mortars is under evaluation. Mechanical properties of mortars prepared with addition of various proportions of metakaolinite were tested. Flexural and compressive strength were used as criteria for evaluation of optimum temperature of metakaolinite burning and proportions of gauging. The effect of addition of 3% and 6% of cement on strength of lime and lime metakaolinite mortars was also evaluated.
