Abstract: Infrastructural systems in industrialized societies increase in size and complexity. One of the consequences is that unforeseen failures of these systems have a huge impact on the functioning of the society. On top of that the realization of these projects also has a large impact on the environmental sustainability. This contribution focuses on the extent and nature of the coupled durability-sustainability issue. Aspects of a system technology concept, i.e. a concept for dealing with high consequence risks, are discussed. The role of new advanced materials, as an example of system technology thinking, is emphasized.
