Abstract: This paper outlines the recently developed service life design framework (PRSLD - Performance and Reliability based Service Life Design), which is aimed at controlling relevant service life developments of a concrete structure (from design-, construction- to operation phase). Within this framework, the activities with respect to execution and maintenance are explicitly based on performance parameters derived from design, reliability and intended service life. The applications of this framework (either for design or for consulting purposes) are highlighted. Special attention is paid to aspects concerning quality control and a monitoring system during the construction period. Examples in larger infrastructural works in the Netherlands are given regarding the adoption of the advanced service life design and monitoring system (including the interactive process and nondestructive test facilities) in order to demonstrate how to guarantee the targeted service life of concrete infrastructures in practice .
