Abstract: Many viaducts and bridges are subjected to environmental conditions and/or to the use of de-icing salt that may induce the corrosion phenomenon. Corrosion causes a diameter reduction of the reinforcement steel, a variation of the bond at the steel-concrete interface and the concrete cracking including spalling and delamination. In order to highlight the worsening of structural behavior of elements subjected to corrosion, the results of a numerical elaboration on bridge grilladges, subjected to pitting and uniform corrosion, are here reported.
Corrosion is simulated by reducing the steel section and by varying its mechanical properties, according to the degradation equations developed by the authors, on the basis of an experimental campaign carried out in the Laboratory of the Rome University "Tor Vergata".
The numerical evaluation aims at highlighting the worst scenario conditions for typical bridge grillage typologies, with the final scope of a prevision of their residual life, and their sensitivity to the corrosion phenomenon.
