Abstract: Slag cement concretes present significant ecological and economical advantages in comparison with Portland cement concretes. But several constructions built in Belgium with this kind of material have exhibited cracking at early age due to the development of delayed deformations under restrained conditions. This study focuses on the autogenous deformation of concretes containing different slag proportions and monitoring by means a new shrinkage testing set-up developed at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. The effect of the choice of the reference time, from which the autogenous deformation is expressed, was also argued. The final setting time seems to be more adequate as reference time than the initial setting time, because of the slow evolution during the setting of the concrete stiffness, a parameter giving an indication about the ability of the material to develop stresses. Finally, it appears that the autogenous shrinkage evolution rate of these concretes increases with the slag content.
