Abstract: Experiments on the bridge pier models are implemented by the three-dimensional testing system developed by NIT. Making use of contacting instruments can only deal with limited points because of the amount of human work. In order to determine the exact shape of a specimen, a numerical simulation for the measurement using a laser transducer is implemented. The optimization program for determination of the position of the laser transducer and the virtual measured data are presented. The error range for determination of the diameter of the specimen for the required accuracy is investigated. From the analysis, we find the computed diameter of the specimen is much influenced by the errors of the rotational angles or the laser values. The computed diameter of the ellipse has a proportional relationship with the error of initial measured data. It is indicated that averaging method and instruments with high accuracy should be beneficial for improving the obtained results.
