Abstract: There are numerous works of concrete affected by alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR) in several countries. Prevention is the only effective way to avoid AAR to develop, although damages are irreversible. A very effective way of dealing with the problem is using methods of testing to assist in the investigation of this deleterious reaction. This study has as its main objective the comparative analysis between the results obtained with the petrographic method and the limits of expansion of three standards of the accelerated mortar bar test, made with aggregates siliceous of State of Pernambuco/Brasil, aiming at identifying reactive characteristics which influenced the result of the bars expansions. The accelerated method did not show adequate reliability because its results were moderated by the limits of expansion of each standard used. Therefore, according to these results, is advisable to develop new studies, as well as to propose new methods, proved to present higher reliability when aggregates are used in concrete structures.
