Abstract: Since it is generally agreed that greenhouse gases are contributing to global warming processes, opportunities for reduction of emissions through composting of wastes are described.
Existing market-based mechanisms as approved within the Clean Development Mechanism to accommodate composting are described, but the potential for carbon credits by composting is not yet delivered. The elements of research and opportunities that need to be realized, as needed, to allow tapping into the huge potential to make composting a viable economic activity are described.
