Abstract: This paper discusses an indirect approach in estimating the kinetics of water migration and consumption, which are key issues in the understanding and further optimization of internal curing (IC) processes. The basis of this attempt is a series of experiments performed on finely grained ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) with and without internal curing, the former being promoted by the use of Super Absorbent Polymers (SAP). Apart from the control mix, UHPC mixes with various amounts of SAP (added as powder) and extra water as well as mixes with no SAP but the same content of additional water were investigated. The comparison of the results obtained indicates that the IC water release from SAP takes place close to the final setting of the control mix whereas IC water availability is clearly in excess of first 24 hours when contents of extra water are considerably higher than predicted by the Powers’ model.
