Abstract: Starting from a concrete mixture with expanded glass granulate as lightweight aggregate, two different approaches to aerate the cement paste for further weight reduction were examined. The first approach to increase the porosity of the matrix was to add high amounts of dry SAP and additional water. In a second experimental study the porosity was maintained by stable foam which was added directly to the concrete mixer at the end of the mixing time. The foam was generated by expanding a concentrated liquid on the basis of a protein. The mixtures (with low oven-dry densities down to 300 kg/m³) were compared to each other concerning properties like strength, Young’s modulus, bulk density and thermal conductivity.
