Abstract: Concrete deterioration caused by alkali-silica reaction (ASR) is a major and world-wide durability problem and concretes exposed to alkali-containing deicer solutions are particularly endangered. An ASR performance test that works with cyclic alternating climate conditions was developed and has been used successfully for some years now at the F.A. Finger-Institute (FIB) to assess project-specific concrete mixtures under exposure to deicer solutions. By using the ASR performance test it could be proved that ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) is effective in mitigating ASR in concretes with reactive aggregates and exposed to deicers. The influence of the higher temperature during the ASR performance test on the degree of reaction of the GGBFS was compared to field conditions to evaluate its impact on the lab-field correlation. It was evident that the main reason for the effectiveness of GGBFS regarding ASR is the formation of a dense microstructure rather than the formation of alkali-containing hydration products.
