Abstract: The aim of this work is to apply Vietnamese kaolin for manufacturing metakaolin (MK) and to investigate effects of three different MKs on properties of the blended paste (setting time, flowability and free lime content) and high performance mortar (HPM) (strength and porosity). Kaolin was transformed into MK at 500°C of calcination. The maximum pozzolanic reactivity index of MK was gained at 800°C. Three MKs increased water demand, and affected mainly initial setting time and slightly final setting time of the blended paste. Porosity of HPM with different MKs seemed to be not significantly different. The specific surface area seemed to play an important role in free lime consumption, especially at a high water to binder ratio (w/b) in the blended paste in early age.
