Abstract: Cementitious materials are generally reinforced with metallic rebars to improve their properties (mechanic resistance, durability, etc.). Although being initially protected by the sound concrete’s alkalinity, these rebars are susceptible to corrosion depending of their surrounding medium evolution. Some studies showed that polymers added in concrete batch modified the fluid transfers inside hardened material porous network. Studies about biological polymeric substances such as EPS180 have shown their corrosion inhibition properties on steel. EPS 180 were added in the batch of cement paste samples embedding C15 steel specimen. Capillary absorption tests showed that EPS addition induces a slowdown of the water penetration in the cement paste porous network and thus limits the penetration of aggressive elements. Open circuit potential measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results showed that the EPS 180 added in cement pastes induce a large increase of the passivation potential and a modification of the cathodic reaction kinetics.
