Abstract:
Silicone sealants exhibit outstanding durability in a variety of environments. This behaviour is a direct result of the unusual organic/inorganic hybrid nature of their siloxane polymer backbone and the consequent chemical and physical interactions with the environment. This chapter reviews the response of silicone sealants to a variety of environmental factors, such as temperature extremes, water, solar radiation, oxygen and ozone, corrosive gases and mechanical stress.
