Abstract:
This chapter discusses the service life prediction problem, reviews the current durability assessment methodology used in the sealants industry and makes recommendations for the development of a future durability assessment methodology. It also proposes test concepts for assessing the experimental factors influencing the durability of sealed joints, and identifies gaps in our knowledge that need to be addressed in order to improve our ability to predict the service life of sealants. A framework for future durability test methods is being developed that hopefully will be capable of serving two purposes, namely to generate some of the more critical information required for the development of a scientific service life model, and to serve as an 'interim' method for screening sealants in terms of their resistance against a standardised set of weathering factors.
