Abstract:
1. Scope
1.1. Remit

CEN/TC 154 has asked the Ad hoc group for recycled aggregates to prepare a technical report to assist evaluation of materials according to Resolution BTS 144/90 - Use of recycled and waste materials in the building and civil engineering field:

The BTS 1 recommends to all CEN/TC concerned with the building and civil engineering field, to evaluate and consider the use of recycled building materials and waste materials, for their use in the construction of buildings and civil engineering work. In this view the CEN/TC concerned are asked to include - where possible - recycled building materials and waste materials in the European Standards for application, necessary additional specifications and/or test methods for recycled building materials and waste materials shall be specified...

1.2. Materials and Applications
It is the view of the Ad hoc group that this technical report deal only with recycled aggregates i.e. aggregate resulting from the re-processing of mineral construction materials. Various categories of material and their applications are given in Table 1. This table refers to materials with an average dry density of greater than 1500 kg/m³ as these have the greatest potential for use. Some consideration has also been given to materials with densities lower than this figure - these have potential as a lightweight filling material, and a "Type 0" category has thus been introduced to Table 5.
