Abstract: RILEM TC 152 PMB has carried out Interlaboratory tests on bituminous materials. These tests dealt with binder, mix design and mechanical testing of asphalt. The results are summarised in " RILEM REPORT 17 " [1]. The report includes a figure, which shows the basic elements of a methodology for bituminous mixtures. According to this methodology in figure 1 the Interlaboratory tests carry out so far cor-respond to step 1 (Characterisation of component and mixtures) and partly to step 7 (Mechani-cal testing). With respect to step 9,1) and 10) of this methodology TC 152 PMB decided to carry out further Interlaboratory tests. These Interlaboratory tests are focused on the assessment and perform-ance evaluation of a given mix design and not on the evaluation of the optimal mix design pro-cedure. Newly laid asphalt courses will be tested and their future performance should be pre-dicted. The prediction deals especially with the main damages, as permanent deformation (rut-ting), cracking (fatigue cracking, thermal cracking) and surface defects (loss of material). The actual behaviour is monitored and documented simultaneously over a period of about ten years. The test program consist two parts. 1. Laboratory part: Laboratory tests on field samples and prediction of long term pavement per-formance. 2. Section operator part: Long term pavement performance of the test sections and comparison of the results. The aim of these Interlaboratory tests is to check the validity of the performance prediction's statements obtained by the different laboratories with respect to pavement performance in prac-tice. Various laboratory tests and the prediction models are on trial. In preparation of this task, RILEM asked 94 different laboratories or road authorities in Europe and overseas tor participate either in laboratory testing and specification or in sponsoring suit-able test sections. As the Interlaboratory tests are not intended to rank the individual laboratories by name, each laboratory is free to decide if it prefers to remain anonymous. The program was performed and accomplished under RILEM TC 182-PEB (Performance Testing and Evaluation of bituminous Materials).
