Abstract: The properties of masonry rubble prepared as recycled construction material, which are important for the utilization, are discussed on the basis of own measurements and results from the literature. Most outstanding feature of the material is the large variation range in the composition as well as in the physical properties.
As main field of application at the present the reuse in unbound systems like fills and embankments dominates. Apart from these technically less demanding fields, the utilization in vegetation applications like green roof plantings or as tree substrates are realized.
The suitability of recycled materials from masonry C&DW for the concrete production has been investigated in several projects. In practice the reuse as aggregate for concrete does not play a role so far. Only some examples for precast concrete elements mostly produced from pure brick rubble are described.
The reuse of masonry C&DW as raw material for the production of bricks was the objective of several investigations. It could be demonstrated, that masonry is suitable as raw material for autoclaved hardening bricks as well as for burnt bricks. Masonry C&DW is also suitable as raw material for lightweight.
