SSCS 2015 - Numerical Modeling Strategies for Sustainable Concrete Structures

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

14-16 December 2015

Cement is the main constituent of the most widely used building material and will continue to be largely used in the years to come. Its production generates CO₂ emissions.

It is, thus, of primary importance to optimize the use of this cement in the concrete structures, while checking that these structures have lifespan compatible with the stakes of the sustainable development To take up this challenge, it is essential to use adapted tools of quantification making it possible to justify, in a rigorous and reliable way, the strategic and technical choices adopted.

The numerical methods (finite elements, finite volumes, finite differences ...} constitute a relevant response to this challenge. They potentially allow, due to a best taken into account of the rheological, physico-chemical, and mechanical concrete properties, and of thermo-hydro mechanics and environmental boundary conditions on the structures, to optimize these structures (optimization with respect to time, money, safety, energy, CC>2 emissions, and, more generally, life cycle), in a way more reliable than the codes and analytical approaches currently used.

The control of the concretes placing in the formworks, their durability, their cracking, their shrinkages, and their creeps, with respect to the sustainable development (evaluation of CO2 emissions, for example) constitute, therefore, the principal topics of this international conference.

The objective is to join together researchers, engineers, architects, urbanists, industrials and owners, to exchange and reflect on the use of these numerical tools and their contribution with respect to the current stakes of sustainable development.Following SSCS'2012 in Aix-en-Provence it was decided to organize the second Conference SSCS'2015 in Rio de Janeiro/Brazil. Taller Internacional

"De la Microestructura al Diseño por Vida Util"

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Progress of Recycling in the Built Environment

Sao Paulo, Brazil

3-5 August 2015

The increasing scarcity of natural resources, associated to the increasing disposal costs have made recycling an attractive business in the building and construction industry. In many countries, Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) represents a notable amount of total municipal solid waste that must be processed to turn wastes into usable materials and to close material cycles.

Additional studies are required for sustainable solutions. To close the gap between the reality and the overall targets in CDW processing and recycling, there is a need for an integrated approach. Several aspects must be considered in one context like dismantling, processing, and application, under economic and social impacts. There is also a need of implementing fast and reliable procedures of characterization and quality control, making easier heterogeneity control of waste materials.

The recovery of homogeneous and unmixed recycled aggregates from the more and more complex becoming material composites in CDW is difficult at the present time. New technologies and procedures are needed that must be applied in industrial scale for unlocking and separation a significant volume of complex composite materials.

Looking at the applications, whereas the use of coarse fraction have been studied for a long time, the use of recycled fine fraction is still partially explored. Reactivity of such materials is under investigation to be use as supplementary cementitious materials (SCM). Mixing optimization of cement-based materials with recycled aggregates and use of different types of additives are strategies to improve eco-efficiency of cement-based materials with recycled aggregates.

The scope of this conference is to promote scientific and technological advances by sharing international experiences and new ideas. Outstanding questions must be answered to generate sustainable solutions.

- Design for deconstruction/recycling
- Processing techniques for CDW
- Development of recycled products
- Performance and durability of recycled products
- Quality controls for recycled products

Durability of concrete

Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, Facultad de Ingeniería Civil, Monterrey, Mexico

From 23 August 2014 to 28 August 2014

Theme:

The concern about concrete durability is far from new. Concrete from ancient Rome is known to contain ox blood, apparently to pass on the strength and endurance of the ox to the final structure.

Modern concrete technology has identified a number of damage mechanisms that can take place depending on concrete environment and concrete quality – damage mechanisms which every year necessitate massive investments in rehabilitation and repair. However, constantly ongoing research refines our theoretical knowledge about why deterioration takes place, models for prediction of deterioration are improved, and new measures to prevent deterioration processes appear and extend the service life of concrete structures. This course brings you up-to-date on this important area.

Course contents:

The course will cover several important challenges of concrete durability, such as:

  • Chloride ingress
  • Carbonation
  • Corrosion
  • Alkali-silica reaction (ASR)
  • Sulphate attack

The course consists of lectures, written exercises and hands-on laboratory exercises and a poster competition. Social activities during the course are planned to promote a stimulating study atmosphere among the participants.

Seminario Iberoamericano sobreDiseño Prestacional paraDurabilidad de Estructuras deHormigón Armado

La Plata, Argentina 28 y 29 de octubre de 2013

FUNDAMENTO
