RILEM activities on bituminous materials date back to the 1960's. The actual RILEM Technical Committee TC 182-PEB on "Performance Testing and Evaluation of Bituminous Materials" was created in 1999, following the former TC 152-PBM "Performance of Bituminous Materials" (chairman L. Francken, Belgium). It concentrates on fundamental aspects of long-term performance related mechanical testing and modeling of asphalt pavement materials, providing pre-normative scientific input and recommendations for unified measurement and test methods in order to advance international standardization (e.g. CEN) and worldwide research efforts.
Over seventy papers were peer-reviewed and finally accepted for the proceedings of the 6th RILEM Symposium Performance Testing and Evaluation of Bituminous Materials PTEBM'03 in Zurich. According to the session's topics of this symposium, the papers in this book are assigned to the following chapters:
- RILEM TC 182-PEB Contributions - Modulus
- Characterization of Bituminous Binders and Mastic - - Fatigue
- Aging - Temperature Induced Cracking
- Bituminous Binder - Aggregate Interaction - Permanent Deformation
- Mix Design - Field and Accelerated Pavement Testing
- Structural Pavement Design and Modeling

This book provides a representative state of the art cross-section on the actual achievements and trends in bituminous materials testing and modeling and is therefore a valuable basis for successful future development. It addresses to innovative material producers, manufacturers, contractors, consulting experts and researchers in the field of bituminous binders, asphalt technology, pavement design and rehabilitation. It is also a valuable reference book for young and experienced students containing many original ideas, concepts and practical advise.
