Today durability issues are studied world wide. Overlap of individual studies is unavoidable. Still it is important to realize that also resources for fundamental research are limited. Developing platforms for exchange of research views and research results is, therefore, extremely important. Even more important is to bring people together who study the problems and who are the owners of the problems and are waiting for appropriate solutions. It was for these reasons that the Materials Department of South East University of Nanjing and the section of Materials & Environment of Delft University of Technology decided to organize the First International Conference on Microstructure Related Durability of Cementitious Composites. The response on the call for papers - about 160 contributions from 25 countries - demonstrates the relevance of the topic.

Much of the preparatory work for this Sino-Dutch initiative has been done by staff members of the Building Material Research Institute of Architectural Academy of Jiang Province and by Dr. H.S. Chen at the Chinese side and by Dr. Guang Ye at the Dutch side. The efforts and enthusiasm of all these people are very much appreciated. This conference was organized under the umbrella of RILEM. The organizers would like to express their appreciation to RILEM for adopting this conference. On behalf of the Organizing Committee we would finally like to thank all the keynote speakers, authors and delegates for their there collaboration and presence in this conference.
